IRS: practical guide to avoid mixing up Modelo 3, Nota de Liquidação and Certidão de Liquidação
Three IRS-related documents, three different uses. Asking for the right one prevents delays and useless attachments.

When a request only says "send the IRS", confusion starts. The client may send the Modelo 3, the Nota de Liquidação, a certificate, a screenshot from Portal das Finanças or a document from another year. For credit, property, rental or income review processes, this difference can block the submission.
Modelo 3: what the client declared
The Modelo 3 declaration is the annual IRS income return. It shows declared income, annexes and the elements submitted by the taxpayer. It helps review income composition, but it is not the final tax result.
Nota de Liquidação: the tax calculation result
The Nota de Liquidação is issued after the Portuguese Tax Authority processes the return. It summarizes the tax calculation, including deductions, withholding and the amount to pay or receive.
Certidão de Liquidação: formal proof for third parties
The Certidão de Liquidação serves as formal proof of an existing tax assessment. If a bank or another entity asks specifically for this certificate, a copy of the Modelo 3 or Nota de Liquidação may not be enough.
